PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: This role will be classified as either Railroad Bridge Engineer or Bridge Engineer, depending on your experience, education, and skillset as determined by CPKC. In this position, you will oversee crucial railway infrastructure, evaluating bridge inspection results and field conditions to identify service risks. You will recommend investment priorities that support structural integrity and capacity, in alignment with our multi-year bridge management plan. As a strong front-line leader, you will cultivate a culture of safety, reliability, and excellence while ensuring smooth operations within the structures department and supporting the safe, efficient movement of the railway network. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer ; equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Minimum of 5 years of railroad engineering experience, with proven expertise in track and structural work; strong preference for previous railroad industry experience
  • Possession of a valid U.S. passport and ability to travel cross-border to Canada is essential
  • Extensive knowledge of field inspection, maintenance, and construction practices for railroad bridges
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with Division Engineers and Structures Managers to support effective management of bridge inspection and maintenance programs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in computer systems
  • Willingness to participate in occasional on-call schedule for emergency response, ensuring operational coverage

Responsibilities

  • Participate in annual inspections with Division Bridge Inspectors to ensure all activities meet federal and government standards
  • Identify and prioritize maintenance needs based on field observations, implementing division-specific action plans for ongoing inspections and repairs
  • Evaluate bridge projects by weighing risk and cost considerations against asset conditions and expected service life
  • Develop and oversee multi-year strategies for bridge renewal and investment planning
  • Analyze inspection findings to support recommendations for capital investments and long-term improvements
  • Oversee the qualifications, training, and mentorship of Bridge Inspectors and the Manager of Bridge Maintenance to meet all safety and policy requirements
  • Conduct audits of inspections, maintenance, and renewal efforts to verify adherence to CPKC Red Book and Bridge Safety Management Plan guidelines
  • Perform annual assessments of bridge capacity, including checks for dimensional clearance and timetable restrictions
  • Manage and update bridge and culvert asset databases, ensuring accuracy and timely recommendations for maintenance activities
  • Direct the scheduling, deployment, and operation of the Bridge Inspection Vehicle to optimize inspection processes
