About The Position

The Railcar Repairman (Carman) is responsible for repairing, modifying, and upgrading rail cars. This includes rebuilding car components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors. The role involves welding (30% of the time), fabricating, and using a cutting torch, as well as performing mechanical labor (frequently - 95% of the time). The repairman will maintain railcars according to blueprints and specifications, using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments. They will also inspect machines and equipment visually and by touch to locate causes of trouble, operate forklifts to move and align parts, and enter car repair information via an electronic keyboard system.

Benefits

  • Pay rate begins at $28/hour, determined based on Carman/Journeyman status.
