About The Position

Responsible for overseeing worksite operations and crew as an assistant to the Operations Manager, completing high quality railcar repairs, modifications and upgrades in a safe and timely manner and according to customer and regulatory guidelines. Customer Service – Ensure quality repairs are made on a timely basis to reduce out-of-service time for the equipment of host railroads and other customers. Safety – Ensure every task is approached proactively with potential risks and safety always in mind and the proper PPE is utilized without exception while on the job. Quality – Ensure quality work is completed that is compliant with both customer and regulatory requirements.

  • Railcar Repair experience
  • Relevant experience in the railcar repair industry.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Basic mathematical skills to include addition, subtraction, fractions and units of measure
  • Reading comprehension to include reading blueprints, technical manuals and regulatory guidelines.
  • Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee worksite operations and crew as an assistant to the Operations Manager.
  • Interact directly with railroad leadership to coordinate railcar locations and work activities of the crew when Operations Manager delegates.
  • Oversee day-to-day compliance with safety procedures when Operations Manager delegates.
  • Analyze complex problems and determine appropriate steps to make repairs within regulatory and customer guidelines.
  • Repair, modify, upgrade and clean railcars according to blueprints and other specifications using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Rebuild railcar components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors using hand tools and power tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Assemble subassemblies, major components and equipment. Check function to test for proper operation.
  • Measure, cut and thread pipes. Replace air lines using hand tools.
  • Move, align and set parts in place using a forklift or bobcat.
  • Repair broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment.
  • Drive company truck or vehicle to run errands or travel to another worksite.
  • Purchase supplies with company credit card while following company guidelines for use.
  • Provides estimates to customers when Operations Manager delegates.
  • Enters car repair / billing information via electronic keyboard system when Operations Manager delegates.
  • Retrieve information needed to respond to audit activities.
  • Maintain a clean work environment. This includes any shop or administrative space and company vehicles.
  • All other duties as assigned by Operations Manager.
