About The Position

As a Railcar Mechanic, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of railcar operations across the United States. Your primary focus will be on inspecting, maintaining, and repairing various types of railcars to meet stringent safety and operational standards. This position requires a thorough understanding of mechanical systems, welding, and hydraulic components specific to railcars, enabling you to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical issues. You will collaborate closely with operations and safety teams to minimize downtime and ensure compliance with federal and industry regulations. Ultimately, your expertise will contribute to the seamless transportation of goods and materials, supporting the broader logistics and supply chain infrastructure.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship or vocational training program in mechanical repair or a related field.
  • Proven experience working as a mechanic, preferably with railcars or heavy equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, welding, and hydraulic components.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background and drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from the Association of American Railroads (AAR) or equivalent.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Familiarity with federal railroad safety regulations and compliance standards.
  • Advanced welding certifications such as MIG, TIG, or Stick welding.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery such as forklifts or cranes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed inspections of railcars to identify mechanical defects and safety hazards.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on braking systems, couplers, wheels, bearings, and other mechanical components.
  • Utilize welding, cutting, and fabrication techniques to repair or replace damaged parts.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot complex mechanical problems and implement effective solutions.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company safety policies and federal regulations such as FRA standards.
  • Operate hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay current with technological advancements and regulatory changes.
