About The Position

The Rail Transportation Training Instructor is responsible for providing quality academic and practical instruction to adult learners while demonstrating the ability to assess performance, evaluate progress and recommend passing, failure, or additional training for Rail employees and students under his/her direction throughout the course of study. The incumbent executes technical training of a difficult nature involving adult learning and teaching principles to include presentation, assessment of classroom and practical instruction.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or possession of a general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a technical and administrative transportation support activity role.
  • Minimum experience in train operations, station operations, and interlocking operations.
  • Roadway Worker Protection Certification, Level 2, immediately after hire.
  • A valid Driver's license and must maintain it while in this job.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor degree in General Studies and/or Training discipline.
  • Previous supervisory experience such as lead person, acting supervisor, utility supervisor or supervisor.
  • Experience with adult learning, which may include technical school certification in adult training.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the presentation of training for both classroom and practical instruction using a variety of instructional techniques and formats such as role playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussion, video and lectures.
  • Performs a variety of pre-training activities, to include planning, organizing, coordinating, conducting student orientations and defined interviews, scheduling all required assessments and evaluations, validating dates regarding potential trainees, and reviewing personnel files.
  • Organizes, develops, evaluates and uses course outline/lesson plans, conducts classroom and hands-on training for Rail Supervisors, Rail Vehicle Operators, Interlocking Operators, Station Managers, Rail Traffic Controller, Rail Station Supervisor, and Car Maintenance personnel.
  • Prepares and orders materials for classroom training, checking equipment for operational readiness.
  • Supervises, monitors and instructs students' use of tools and equipment in both real and simulated environments to include stations, yard and mainline operations, roadway preparations, communication procedures, and train recovery/rescue procedures.
  • Demonstrates functionality of application and software, basis software training program, manages training schedules, creates training tools such as instructor guides, student guides and user manuals in a professional written or computerized format.
  • Determines training needs of students and develops alternative training methods if expected improvements are not seen.
  • Provides individualized instruction and tutorial or remedial instruction if needed.
  • Maintains and improves subject matter expertise in adult learning and new technologies relative to the Office of Rail Transportation (RTRA) systems and equipment.
  • Integrates changes to improve lessons plans for adult training techniques.
  • Transfers knowledge and skills to new and current employees critical to the safety of all employees and customers using the rail system.
  • Ensures compliance with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) directives, Metrorail Operating Rules Book (MOR), time accountability and complaint resolution.
  • Acts as expert witness for the Authority in litigation.
