About The Position

The Rail Project Safety Manager at RailPros is a hybrid role requiring both management of safety programs for railroad construction projects; and providing railroad safety expertise and support to the RailPros internal Safety and Training Department team. This position is responsible for overseeing and managing rail and transit safety compliance across multiple construction projects. The Rail Project Safety Manager will develop and implement safety plans, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and foster a strong safety culture among contractors, subcontractors, and project teams. This role involves collaborating with the Engineering Department and project managers to address safety risks, enforce safety standards, and monitor safety performance. The ideal candidate is experienced in managing safety programs for large-scale rail projects and is comfortable with travel to project sites. This role will also provide support for assisting with the development and implementation of safety programs, policies, procedures, credentials, and safety management systems for the RailPros Safety and Training Department.

Requirements

  • At least 20 years of experience in Safety Management for rail or transit projects of similar scope and complexity.
  • Extensive experience managing safety compliance for large-scale construction projects across multiple locations.
  • Strong knowledge of Amtrak, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ/PATH, Conrail, CSX, and Maryland Transit Administration, and OSHA safety standards.
  • Experience in developing, reviewing, and enforcing safety plans and reports.
  • OSHA 30-Hour training certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Safety Manager for at least one major construction project, design-build, or accelerated bridge construction project.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) designation.
  • Certified Transit Safety and Security Professional (TSSP) or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) designation.

Responsibilities

  • Safety Program Management: Develop and maintain comprehensive safety programs aligned with host/operating railroad requirements and other applicable standards.
  • Ensure proper implementation and enforcement of safety policies across project sites.
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate safety hazards.
  • Contractor and Subcontractor Oversight: Review contractor safety plans and ensure compliance with all safety and security requirements.
  • Issue notices, warnings, or Stop Work Orders as necessary to address safety violations.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with Site Safety Inspectors and project teams to coordinate safety efforts and ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Department to integrate safety protocols into project planning and execution.
  • Training and Certification Compliance: Successfully complete and maintain certifications for the Amtrak Track Safety Training Course and other required safety certifications.
  • Deliver safety training and promote safety awareness among project teams.
  • Incident Management and Reporting: Lead investigations into safety incidents and near-misses, ensuring corrective actions are taken promptly.
  • Prepare detailed safety reports and provide updates to stakeholders, including regulatory agencies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with the OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety & Health Course (29 CFR 1926) and hold current certifications in First Aid, AED, CPR, and Blood-borne Pathogens Training.
