About The Position

HDR’s Rail Engineer in Northern Virginia will provide technical expertise and design support for complex freight and transit rail infrastructure projects. The Rail Engineer will serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in freight and transit rail engineering projects, performing assignments and resolving issues of greater scope and complexity. This role involves taking responsibility for the project lifecycle, from site feasibility analysis to final design and through the construction phase. The engineer will evaluate technical alternatives, interface with other disciplines, and support Project Managers in leading scope development, budgeting, scheduling, and project documentation. Key tasks include leading design, conducting work sessions, preparing detailed engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates for rail projects in accordance with quality objectives and regulations. The position also requires reviewing work by junior staff, coordinating with subconsultants, managing client communication, participating in field assessments and construction inspections, implementing project quality plans, and collaborating with various managers for project reviews.

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field and 3 years of experience in rail or general civil engineering or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field and 5 years of experience in rail or general civil engineering.
  • Experience in developing track and civil design plans to include alignments, drainage, structural, and utilities tasks.
  • Experience in site plan development.
  • Experience in assisting in development of project scope, budget, schedule, and project documentation.
  • Experience in preparing specifications and cost estimates.
  • Proficiency with OpenRail Designer or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation.
  • Proficiency with InRoads.
  • Proficiency with Autoturn software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Engineer-in-Training certification or must have passed Fundamentals of Engineering examination.
  • Ability to travel regionally overnight for site visits, field assessments, and construction inspection up to 15% to 25% of time.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and design support for complex freight and transit rail infrastructure projects.
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in freight and transit rail engineering projects, performing assignments and resolving issues of greater scope and complexity.
  • Take responsibility for project lifecycle, ranging from site feasibility analysis to final design and through the construction phase of railway projects.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives and interface with other disciplines.
  • Support Project Managers in leading scope development, budgeting, scheduling and project documentation.
  • Lead design tasks, conducting concept, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals, and other disciplines.
  • Prepare detailed engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates for rail projects in accordance with the quality objectives and regulations, laws, and standards, including track and civil design plans for mainline, industrial, yard and terminal facilities, as well as track alignments, drainage, utilities, and minor structural elements.
  • Review work performed by junior engineers and technical staff.
  • Coordinate staffing and coordinate with subconsultants to keep projects on schedule and within budget and manage day-to-day communication (verbal and written) with the client.
  • Participate in field assessments, site visits, and construction inspections as needed.
  • Implement procedures and oversee use of project quality plans.
  • Work with the Business/Accounting Manager, Project Controller or Company Controller and Department Manager or Managing Principal for project reviews.
