About The Position

This is a hands-on laborer role supporting a rail yard crew with a variety of physically demanding tasks. Duties include shoveling, sweeping, handling materials, using hand tools, and assisting with general site upkeep. While some operation of heavy equipment may be involved, the primary focus is manual labor. Prior experience in rail or aggregate environments is a plus, but not required. Training will be provided.

Requirements

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
  • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all Shelly Company employees. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to do routine paperwork.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in rail or aggregate environments is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Unloading product from railcars at various company facilities.
  • Assist the plant foreperson with the daily operations and upkeep of the plant.
  • Other miscellaneous duties include but not limited to: general labor, shoveling, performing necessary equipment maintenance, assisting foreperson and/ or crew members as needed.
  • May perform welding and fabrication duties as required.
  • Day to day work may include safe operation of heavy equipment including but not limited to; Frontend Loader and skid steer loader.
  • Ability to detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • General understanding of OSHA & MSHA regulations.
