RaHP VEC vector surveillance intern
About The Position
Position Summary: We are seeking a recent graduate or current undergraduate/graduate student interested in conducting tick and tick-borne pathogen surveillance in Utah. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the One Health team at the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, faculty at Colorado State University, and partners in the CDC-funded Rockies and High Plains Vector-borne Diseases Center. Job duties will include spending several consecutive hours outside collecting ticks in natural areas, morphological identification of tick species, screening ticks for pathogens, data entry and management, creating educational materials for the public and communicating with collaborators and community members. Requirements
- High school diploma
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program; or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program (<5 years)
Nice To Haves
- Experience/interest in ecological field research
- Interest in public health and/or vector-borne diseases
- Exceptional attention to detail and organization
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working autonomously
- Experience driving long distances in rural areas
- Access to a reliable vehicle, preferably with 4-wheel drive or high-clearance
Responsibilities
- Drive to field sites across Utah
- Collect ticks from natural areas by dragging/flagging
- Morphologically identify tick species
- Enter and manage database with tick surveillance data
- Analyze data and generate figures and tables
