About The Position

Seeking a radiology technician who specializes in performing bone density scans (DEXA scans). These scans measure bone mineral density to assess bone health and detect conditions like osteopenia and osteoporosis. This is a stand alone position, supporting our new bone density program. This bone density technologists will be responsible for operating and maintaining the specialized equipment used for bone density scans, ensuring it is functioning correctly and calibrated properly. This role requires proficiency in DEXA imaging, patient care, documentation and communication with referring physicians. the technologist will be responsible for all aspects of scan performance, data entry, equipment maintenance and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • Vocational or Technical school Diploma required.
  • Current license to practice as a Radiology Technologist in New York State, required.
  • Current ARRT Radiology registration, required.
  • 1-3 years of technical experience, required.

Responsibilities

  • Bone density technologists are responsible for operating and maintaining the specialized equipment used for bone density scans, ensuring it is functioning correctly and calibrated properly.
  • They are trained to perform DEXA scans on patients, adhering to safety protocols and ensuring proper radiation exposure.
  • After the scan, they record the results and provide them to the referring physician for interpretation.
  • They interact with patients, explain the procedure, answer questions, and provide reassurance during the scan.
  • Perform bone mineral density (BMD) exams using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) equipment in accordance with physician orders and industry protocols.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort while obtaining high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Independently manage the workflow of the bone density unit, including scheduling, imaging, and documentation.
  • Prepare patients for procedures and clearly explain the process.
  • Accurately input patient and scan data into PACS and EMR systems.
  • Calibrate and perform routine quality control on DXA equipment.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, ALARA principles, and other regulatory and safety guidelines.
  • Collaborate with interpreting physicians and provide scan results in a timely manner.
  • Maintain patient records and documentation for billing and auditing purposes.
  • Order and maintain supplies related to bone density scanning.
  • Participate in continuing education and stay current with best practices in bone densitometry.
  • Translates examination into layman terms based on professional knowledge to relieve patient of pre-testing anxiety.
  • Positions patient for taking of radiographs according to the departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Recognizes and promptly reports patient’s motor abnormalities; including, fainting, discoloration, contrast reactions etc., to the physician.
  • Utilizes film markers and ensures images are properly marked as the “right” or “left” side.
  • Ensures images are legibly labeled with correct date and patient identification.
  • Keys in Patient history data and other pertinent information obtained from requisition.
  • Arranges, attaches, or adjusts immobilization and supportive devices for patients.
  • Performs related duties as required.
