About The Position

The Radiology Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of essential duties and responsibilities in the radiology department. This includes verifying patient identification and the procedure requested, assessing patient risk for allergic reactions, and preparing and administering IV and oral contrast agents. The technologist will monitor patients for reactions to medications, assess vital signs, and provide accurate explanations and instructions regarding exams and procedures. They will also educate patients about the risks and benefits of radiation, position patients for imaging, and ensure proper transfer of images to PACS. Compliance with safety practices and regulatory requirements is crucial, as well as participation in quality improvement initiatives and staff training.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Radiologic Technology required.
  • Current license in the State of Montana as a Radiology Technologist.
  • Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or a temporary license in the State of Montana and ARRT registry eligible.
  • Permanent license and registration with ARRT will be required within 5 months of hire.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies patient identification and the procedure requested or prescribed.
  • Verifies patient’s pregnancy status.
  • Assesses patient risk for allergic reaction to medication prior to administration.
  • Reviews lab values prior to medication administration.
  • Explains effects and potential side effects of medications.
  • Prepares and administers IV and Oral contrast agents.
  • Monitors patient for reaction to medication.
  • Assesses patient vital signs as needed.
  • Determines the need for and selects supplies, accessory equipment, shielding, and positioning and immobilization devices.
  • Provides an accurate explanation and instructions regarding exams and procedures.
  • Addresses questions and concerns regarding exams and procedures.
  • Educates the patient about the risks and benefits of radiation.
  • Positions patient for anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.
  • Performs QA on images and ensures proper transfer to PACS while electronically completing the exam in a timely manner.
  • Selects appropriate radiation exposure factors using the principles of ALARA.
  • Employs proper radiation safety practices and uses lead protective devices appropriately.
  • Controls access to radiation exposure areas.
  • Obtains and prepares supplies, medications and equipment for sterile and specialized radiological procedures.
  • Uses sterile or aseptic technique when indicated.
  • Performs procedural timeout.
  • Explains post-procedural instructions to patient or patient’s family.
  • Complies with all federal, state, local and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Minimizes radiation exposure using ALARA principles, equipment safety and overall patient safety.
  • Assists lead tech in prioritizing the needs of the referring physicians and patients to accommodate add-on exams into daily schedules.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, changes and updates of protocols.
  • Participates in both CQI and QA yearly plans and activities.
  • Improves patient experience and satisfaction scores for both the modality and the department.
  • Requests input for staffing schedules that meet both the physicians and patient’s needs.
  • Ensures timely and quality transfer of all images and studies to PACS.
  • Participates in training of new employees and assists in developing a new hire orientation function.
  • Assists in teaching or improving skills to co-workers.
  • Shares responsibility for training and readiness needed to be compliant with DNV, CMS and other regulating agencies.
  • Communicates issues that compromise proper and safe operation of equipment.
  • Participates in department projects such as ACR accreditation and Quality and Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Assists lead technologist in ordering and management of inventory.
  • Maintains positive and professional communications between other modalities, nursing, ED, scheduling, admitting, physicians, and transporters.
  • Sets the example of positive interactions, encouraging actions and promoting co-workers, physicians’ hospital, and medical group.
  • Completes other assignments as requested by leadership team.
