About The Position

The Radiological Health Specialist is responsible for performing professional field and laboratory duties within a radiological health program. The primary goal is to identify, control, or eliminate ionizing radiation health hazards associated with radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment. This role involves supervising a small technical staff and ensuring compliance with radiological health standards and regulations.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of radioactive isotopes and ionizing radiation and its measurements.
  • Knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics as applied to radiation control.
  • Experience in handling radioactive materials and controlling radiation hazards.
  • Ability to use and calibrate laboratory radiation counters and detecting instruments.
  • Familiarity with the State Occupational Radiation Protection Code and related regulations.
  • Ability to prepare reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish working relationships with agencies and associates.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional field and laboratory duties in a radiological health program.
  • Plan, supervise, and participate in surveys and investigations of ionizing radiation effects.
  • Evaluate and supervise radiation monitoring studies of air, water, food, and plant life.
  • Formulate rules and regulations pertaining to radiation protection procedures and standards.
  • Prepare reports containing findings, analyses, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Participate in the review of plans and specifications for radiation protection and control.
  • Provide technical assistance in radiological health activities with federal and state agencies.
  • Confer with representatives of nuclear reactor and atomic fuel processing installations regarding waste disposal methods.
  • Serve as the Rhode Island State Representative on the New England States Radiological Health Committee.
