About The Position

The Hazardous/Radioactive Materials Specialist manages the storage and processing of incoming radioactive liquid and dry waste from the University and the UNC Hospitals and supervises the disposal of medical waste. This position will provide technical and management assistance with hazardous waste accumulation and storage requirements for non-laboratory areas. This position serves as a member of the University's Emergency Response Team for response to chemical spills and releases. This position serves to determine which laboratory chemicals should become part of the University's laboratory chemical recycling program. This position coordinates with Radiation Technician and the Hazardous Materials Technicians who transport full, liquid radioactive waste containers to the Storage facility for decay in storage or managed storage prior to transport to an offsite disposal facility. This position is also responsible for maintaining the warehouse. This includes housekeeping, organization, inspections, and supplies/materials inventory for the warehouse. The position will maintain a list and report findings to the Warehouse Manager.

Requirements

  • Four year degree in a related major or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • NC Class C or higher valid Commercial Driver's License with a hazardous materials endorsement.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training certification.
  • RCRA hazardous waste training certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) preferred but not required.
