The position involves receiving and processing all telephone calls to the police department, dispatching police units, and performing various clerical and administrative tasks to support departmental personnel. The role is critical in ensuring effective communication and coordination within the police department and with the public.

  • Receive and process all incoming telephone calls to the police department.
  • Obtain essential information including type of emergency and location, and dispatch police units as needed.
  • Maintain radio and telephone logs.
  • Monitor radio network to receive, relay, and transmit messages including requests for wreckers, ambulances, and fire department.
  • Operate LEIN computer to perform various record checks including driving records, criminal history checks, and warrant confirmations.
  • Maintain a computer database for the entry, storage, and retrieval of police data.
  • Edit police reports for submission to the State of Michigan records division.
  • Maintain files containing original copies of all police reports/records.
  • Monitor security system for officers while processing prisoners and in holding cells.
  • Obtain information from homeowners for vacation and vacant home checks.
  • Assist with walk-in traffic including taking complaints and fielding citizen questions.
  • Prepare police reports for dissemination to insurance companies and reconcile insurance money with receipts weekly.
  • Liaison for Amber Alert activations.
  • Enter information into CAD for service calls including business checks and traffic stops.
  • Perform clerical and office duties including maintaining subpoena logs and liquor license files.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in a clerical or administrative role, preferably in a law enforcement or public safety environment.
  • Proficiency in using computers and various software applications for data entry and record keeping.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Experience with LEIN or similar law enforcement databases.
  • Knowledge of police procedures and protocols.
  • Familiarity with emergency dispatching procedures.
