At the direction of the radiation oncologist, and in tandem with a certified Radiation Therapist, assists in the radiation treatment process according to established guidelines and policies/procedures. The Radiation Therapist will assist in the review of a patient’s treatment record for completeness, confer with physicians, physics/dosimetry, and colleagues for clarification prior to, during, and after treatment when necessary. They will support the review of the electronic chart (Aria) and patient treatment record for consistency, completeness, and accuracy prior to treatment delivery. The role involves preparing the treatment room and equipment according to established procedures, explaining procedures to patients according to departmental standards, and following standards in positioning of patients and treatment processes according to established policies and procedures. The Radiation Therapist will monitor patients during procedures and report any changes in condition to the physician or other appropriate patient care personnel. They will assist in the simulation and treatment planning process, acquire imaging via CBCT or portal imaging as prescribed by the physician, and review images prior to treatment to ensure alignment falls within allowable tolerances. Additionally, they will schedule patients for treatment and simulations in the Aria scheduling system, inspect all equipment safety interlocks, monitor equipment, report malfunctions, submit charges for services rendered, participate in the clinical education and training of students, and adhere to ALARA guidelines during all procedures.
