About The Position

The Radiation Safety Specialist at West Virginia University is responsible for ensuring radiation protection across all research laboratories and medical facilities associated with the university and its hospitals. This role involves the development and implementation of a comprehensive radiation safety program, focusing on compliance with federal regulations and the establishment of effective safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as health physics, radiation safety, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience in radiation safety or a related field, preferably in a healthcare or research environment.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and guidelines regarding radiation safety.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess radiation exposure and compliance with safety standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in health physics or radiation safety (e.g., CHP, CIH).
  • Experience with Quality Management Programs in a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with radiation monitoring equipment and bioassay evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director with the implementation of new initiatives for increased control of certain radionuclides as required by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC).
  • Implement a program for maintaining occupational radiation exposures in accordance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and WV Radiological Health Program rules.
  • Assist the Director with consultations to evaluate radiation safety aspects of institutional policies and provide recommendations for effective radiation dose equivalent assessments.
  • Establish and maintain a Quality Management Program to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and conduct comprehensive audits for Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine divisions.
  • Determine the need for personnel radiation monitoring and evaluate bioassays, monitoring personnel radiation exposure and bioassay records for high exposures.
  • Notify individuals of radiation exposures approaching limits and recommend appropriate remedial actions.
  • Assess and evaluate specifications of shielding design to protect patients and the public from radiation hazards during medical procedures.
