About The Position

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for overseeing the organization's radiation safety program, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role also includes responsibility for hazardous materials packaging and transportation in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The RSO will promote a culture of safety, provide training, and ensure the safe use, handling, and transport of radioactive materials.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer or eligibility to obtain certification.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in radiation safety, including regulatory compliance and program management.
• Strong knowledge of NRC, OSHA, DOT, and state regulations related to radiation and hazardous materials.
• Experience with radioactive waste management and emergency response planning.
• Excellent communication, training, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

• Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or equivalent credential.
• Experience in a medical, research, or industrial setting.
• Familiarity with radiation detection instruments and software.
• Strong organizational and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain the Radiation Protection Program (RPP).
• Monitor and manage the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
• Conduct routine audits, inspections, and surveys to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Investigate radiation incidents and recommend corrective actions.
• Maintain accurate records of radiation exposure, inventory, and safety procedures.
• Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (e.g., NRC, state radiation control programs).
• Provide radiation safety training to staff and ensure understanding of emergency procedures.
• Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and hazard analysis.
• Develop and deliver training on general safety, chemical hygiene, PPE, and emergency response.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other relevant regulations.
• Manage hazardous waste disposal and environmental reporting.
• Support incident investigations and corrective action implementation.
• Promote a proactive safety culture across all departments.
• Ensure proper classification, labeling, and documentation of radioactive and hazardous materials for transport.
• Oversee packaging and shipping procedures in compliance with DOT and IATA regulations.
• Train personnel on DOT hazardous materials handling and shipping requirements.
• Maintain shipping records and ensure timely reporting of incidents or non-compliance.
