About The Position

The Physicist at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of care in radiation therapy. Under the supervision of the Chief Physicist, the physicist is responsible for the operational aspects of radiation therapy equipment, radiation safety, and the overall functioning of the Radiation Oncology facilities. This position involves calibrating equipment, conducting quality control procedures, and educating staff on radiation protection practices.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in a relevant field with at least five years of direct experience in radiation therapy.
  • Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) upon hire.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Radiation Therapy.
  • Familiarity with a variety of concepts, practices, and procedures in the field of medical physics.

Responsibilities

  • Work with other physics staff to assist in general medical physics duties in a radiation therapy facility.
  • Ensure every treatment plan is checked and/or IMRT QA performed before the first fraction.
  • Provide quality assurance of patient treatment through weekly checks of patient charts and attending general chart rounds.
  • Perform routine or specialized dosimetry to check treatment plan parameters.
  • Conduct spot checks and review all technical and scientific data from simulation through treatment to ensure accuracy and precision of treatment plans.
  • Design and fabricate special ancillary equipment, immobilization devices, compensating filters, molds, and blocking devices.
  • Perform chart checks for mathematical errors or prescription changes during treatment.
  • Provide consultation to assure accurate radiation dose delivery.
  • Verify proper operation and safety of all machines and sources producing radiation according to established guidelines and protocols.
  • Maintain and establish protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry and follow radiation safety standards.
  • Ensure proper documentation is recorded and maintained.
  • Participate in ongoing protocol studies for correct data gathering and documentation.
  • Assist the RSO with the Radiation Safety Program.
  • Ensure efficient workflow in the department by performing other duties as assigned by the Radiation Oncology Manager.
  • Perform routine checks on radiation therapy equipment according to AAPM guidelines.
  • Conduct VMAT/IMRT QA on all IMRT/VMAT plans.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly checks on all radiation delivery machines.
  • Assist the Chief Physicist during annual machine QAs and perform machine QA after component changes.
  • Work with field service engineers to ensure machine compliance after service events.
  • Educate staff and physicians on radiation safety procedures and care for brachytherapy patients.
