About The Position

As a Radiation Detection Engineer within the Compatibility and Surveillance team at Y-12, the candidate will be responsible for conducting leading edge research and development activities with specific radiation detection applications towards manufacturing, production, quality operations, or related national security applications. Common tasks may require the candidate be able to apply technical principles and knowledge in the fields of nuclear, electrical and mechanical engineering, physics, and computer science towards concepts for development and applied research in support of plant operations and outside research projects. The ideal candidate is highly capable of performing radiation transport simulation using MCNP or similar packages, source term analysis, and high-level numerical methods for a range of applications using Python, Matlab, or other common engineering analysis platform. Within an interdisciplinary team, the candidate will aid in proposal writing and support various research projects in radiation detection, instrument analysis, and interdisciplinary projects that branch into related fields of analytical chemistry and materials science to develop solutions to unique problems. In addition, the candidate will be able to contribute to formal presentations, project reviews, and technical basis documents of engineering projects, as well as act as a leader, advisor, or consultant as needed. Typical projects will require the candidate to work closely with scientists, engineers, other technical staff, and representatives of design agencies, vendors, and contractors as required to ensure effective and necessary technical cooperation at all levels that results in the completion of assigned objectives. The ideal candidate must also work well in a production support environment where plant and production needs may necessitate accelerated project schedules, an ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team, and effective communication across various knowledge levels and backgrounds.
