About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The primary responsibility of this position is as an advanced level technologist in the rabies laboratory routinely performing necropsy and direct immunofluorescence (DFA) for the detection of rabies virus. This position will perform testing in accordance with QA policies, and perform testing for the purposes of rabies surveillance. This position will provide technical leadership and training for other personnel on various highly technical tests such as rabies DFA, cell culture and molecular testing of rabies virus. This position will assist in the evaluation, performance verification/validation, and implementation of new methods and techniques. Once fully trained, this position serves as primary technologist for QA/QC activities for molecular testing in the rabies lab, such as instrument maintenance, and requisite documentation, as well as, assisting junior staff with troubleshooting, test results and interpretations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology, chemistry or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory in the assigned area; or
  • Associate’s degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of medical laboratory experience; or
  • Completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using and troubleshooting labware and laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of standards and rules of regulatory agencies associated with public health laboratory testing and the ability to adhere to SOPs, follow complex oral and written instructions, and instruct others in complex technical procedures.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and how to take appropriate precautions to avoid infection.
  • Ability to handle and manipulate surgical tools used in animal necropsy.
  • Previous immunization against rabies

Responsibilities
