About The Position

Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living. The R&D Technician II independently produces complex prototype components and assemblies using additive and subtractive manufacturing equipment. They review engineering prints, provide basic DFM/manufacturability feedback, and support CNC programming and fixture design using SolidWorks and related CAM tools. This role requires greater autonomy and technical judgment to support ongoing medical robotics R&D programs.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of machining or prototype fabrication experience, preferably in a precision or regulated industry.
  • Strong proficiency in manual machining and CNC setup/operation.
  • Ability to create or modify CAM programs and fixture designs in SolidWorks.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and precision measurement techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with cross-functional engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Program and operate Haas CNC mills and lathes using SolidWorks/CAM workflows.
  • Manufacture precise prototype parts using manual mills, manual lathes, and 3D printers.
  • Review engineering drawings for clarity and manufacturability; provide DFM input to engineering teams.
  • Design and produce basic fixtures and tooling to support CNC operations.
  • Perform in-process inspections using micrometers, bore gauges, height measurement systems, and other precision metrology tools.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Assist in planning fabrication approaches for new prototype requests.
  • Maintain equipment, tooling inventories, and shop documentation.
