About The Position

Synthego is a pioneering force in the biotechnology industry, dedicated to advancing the frontiers of CRISPR cell and gene therapies through cutting-edge CRISPR technology and expertise. This summer we are opening our doors and looking to welcome a R&D Mechanical Engineering intern to partner with our Synthegoats within our Hardware Research & Development team. The intern will work closely with a team of engineers, process chemists, and factory operators to build and deploy new systems that will streamline manufacturing operations, enhance reagent handling precision, and improve operator safety. Working with experts in mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering, they will gain experience in mechanical design in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, with a particular emphasis on the unique design challenges involved in chemical process automation. This opportunity is a 10-week paid internship running from June to August.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Excellent understanding of manufacturing techniques, processes and DFM concepts.
  • Familiarity with common workshop tools.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD design tools such as SolidWorks or Onshape.
  • Hands-on experience building things, ideally demonstrated with a portfolio of projects.
  • Must be onsite in Redwood City, CA during the 10-week duration of the internship this summer.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with Python or similar programming language.
  • Advanced CAD skills including familiarity with complex assemblies and drawings.
  • Experience with design and/or simulation of air handling systems.
  • Machine shop experience.
  • Experience working in a chemistry lab.

Responsibilities

  • Gather requirements through user interviews, process review, and use of measurement tools
  • Create CAD models and drawings based on functional requirements
  • Conceptualize, prototype, and assemble, and test mechanical systems
  • Conduct verification and validation studies, analyze test results, and iterate on designs
  • Meet mission-critical project deadlines in fast-paced environment
