The R&D Manager at Prime Matter Labs is responsible for leading a team of chemists in the development and enhancement of personal care products. This role involves overseeing product formulation, ensuring quality control, and driving innovation to meet market trends. The manager will collaborate with various departments to support customer growth and maintain high standards of product development.

  • Lead the R&D team at PML West.
  • Recruit, train, and coach R&D chemists.
  • Research, formulate, and refine new personal care product formulas.
  • Create new product innovations based on market and ingredient trends.
  • Make lab batches and update lab books with formulas and specifications.
  • Enter formulas in PML formulation software (Louis).
  • Create applicable R&D documents such as certificates of analysis and ingredient lists.
  • Verify and double sign lab books daily.
  • Provide project updates in the system and maintain a weekly lab schedule.
  • Offer technical support for R&D and troubleshoot to meet deadlines.
  • Interface with customers in meetings and presentations.
  • Communicate R&D updates to the company.
  • Verify formulas against lab books and product briefs for approval.
  • Determine annual lab budget and establish KPIs for progress presentation.
  • Evaluate R&D resources to maintain business goals and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Create pathways and annual goals for R&D team members.
  • Establish and maintain a strong team spirit in the lab.
  • Drive continuous process improvement and present new innovation ideas.
  • Collaborate with the CSO on specialty projects.
  • Partner with the Quality Manager for quality control implementation.
  • Work with the Regulatory Manager on compliance processes.
  • Collaborate with business development to expand customer relationships.
  • Partner with the VP of Software Engineering to develop innovative tools.
  • Master's degree in chemistry or related field (preferred).
  • 10+ years' experience in personal care and OTC formula development.
  • 8+ years leading product development of new formulas and ingredients.
  • 5+ years of experience with production and scale-up.
  • Experience leading R&D teams at a medium to large contract manufacturer.
  • Strong team building skills and impressive communication skills.
  • Interest in the role of new technology in product development.
  • Ability to make quick decisions and take ownership of outcomes.
  • Undergraduate study in organic chemistry and physical chemistry.
  • Study focus on personal care/cosmetic chemistry.
