About The Position

R&D Machinist (Machinist III) - Peripheral Vascular Division The R&D Machinist III plays a critical role in supporting Stryker’s IVS product development and engineering teams by producing high‑precision components, prototypes, and test fixtures. This position is responsible for setting up and operating a broad range of manual machine tools, interpreting engineering drawings, planning machining processes, and ensuring all parts meet strict dimensional and quality requirements. Success in this role requires extensive hands‑on machining experience, strong problem‑solving skills, good judgment within established procedures, and the ability to mentor junior machinists while maintaining a safe, efficient, and well‑organized shop environment.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or GED
  • 2 years of related machining experience

Nice To Haves

  • 3-5 years preferred - CNC
  • Blueprint reading, measuring tools - calipers, micrometers, gauges

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manual machine tools—including lathes, mills, drill presses, and grinders—to produce precision R&D components and prototypes.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and specifications to plan machining sequences and select appropriate tools, materials, and fixtures.
  • Perform specialized or non‑standard machining operations required for prototype and experimental fabrication, adjusting processes to maintain accuracy and quality.
  • Determine and apply correct speeds, feeds, and machining parameters based on materials, tooling, and tolerance requirements.
  • Inspect parts using precision measurement instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators) to ensure all components meet dimensional and engineering specifications.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on manual machine tools, troubleshoot equipment or tooling issues, and maintain cutting tools as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well‑organized work environment while following all established shop safety procedures.
  • Document machining steps and deviations, communicate effectively with engineers and project teams, and guide junior machinists when required.
