About The Position

The R&D Lab Engineer supports the planning, execution, and documentation of laboratory tests for the R&D Lab. This mid-level, hands-on role works with prototypes, test fixtures, and lab equipment, handling data collection, analysis, and reporting. The role operates with moderate independence and collaborates closely with engineers, designers, and technicians to ensure product quality, safety, and performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Technology, or related field OR equivalent hands-on experience in a lab, testing, or engineering environment.
  • ~3–5 years of experience in test engineering, lab, product development, or related technical role.
  • Proficiency with common lab test equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, test standards, and basic schematics.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and organizational skills.
  • Solid data skills (Excel or similar) for analysis and charting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting.
  • Ability to work safely around industrial and lab equipment and lift up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience running test programs from request through reporting and recommendations.
  • Familiarity with DAQ software and sensors (load cells, accelerometers, strain gauges, etc.).
  • Experience with CAD for reviewing models and communicating fixture concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing, basic machining, or prototyping.
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics and data visualization.
  • Exposure to lean/continuous improvement practices (e.g., 5S, standard work).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures for prototypes and production samples (mechanical, environmental, durability).
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot lab test equipment (e.g., UTM, impact rigs, environmental chambers, DAQ systems).
  • Design or specify basic test fixtures and custom setups with engineering support.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze test data; apply basic statistics and generate clear plots/tables.
  • Prepare concise test reports, maintain accurate records, and follow lab standards and procedures.
  • Support fixture and equipment maintenance, coordinate calibrations, and help maintain a safe, organized, audit-ready lab (5S).
  • Identify workflow or setup issues and contribute to continuous improvement activities.
  • Provide guidance to junior staff or interns on lab practices and test execution as needed.
