The R&D Formulation Scientist at Nellson Nutraceutical is responsible for developing innovative powder products labeled as dietary supplements and/or foods for both new and existing customers. This role involves providing technical support within the R&D organization, leading product development from ideation to commercialization, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals. The position requires a strong foundation in food science and engineering, as well as the ability to conduct shelf-life testing and manage product transfers efficiently.

  • Lead the development of commercially successful and innovative new products for the powder business from concept to commercialization.
  • Develop effective relationships and work closely with Quality, Sales, Operations, and Nellson customers.
  • Support and lead ideation and development of innovative products and platforms via formulation and/or process driven technologies using customer/marketing insights and existing/new technologies.
  • Maintain awareness of market trends and comparative products.
  • Present and articulate product ideas and innovations to internal and external customers.
  • Identify and qualify new equipment and/or processes for new product commercialization.
  • Gain full command of the internal formulation system for food product development and commercialization.
  • Run and monitor bench-top and manufacturing scale-up batches.
  • Support R&D team through the identification and sourcing of new, novel ingredients.
  • Support and lead product transfers from other processing locations for maximizing schedule flexibility, efficiency, and lowest cost production.
  • Capture and analyze key process data to determine and communicate key process variables and execute corrective action steps.
  • Assist R&D Sr Scientist in completing development and commercialization of new products.
  • Conduct shelf-life protocols, including the preparation and/or review of shelf-life testing protocols.
  • Prepare and/or manufacture shelf-life testing samples, monitoring, evaluation, and summary of results for shelf-life test results.
  • Develop a network of outside contacts such as customers, vendors, consultants, and educators.
  • Requires a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the food industry.
  • Requires a four-year college or university degree or its equivalent in Food Science, Nutrition Science, Food Engineering, or related science degree.
  • Knowledge and experience with Design of Experiment (DOE) techniques.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills for troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with powder blending, powder transfer, pneumatic conveyance, and packaging formats.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to speak effectively in front of groups of customers or employees.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and use time effectively while managing competing demands.
  • Contribute to building a positive team spirit and display a high amount of professionalism.
  • Responds promptly to customer needs.
  • A firm foundation in food science and food engineering is required.
  • Solid product formulation skills.
  • Firm understanding of ingredient functionality and nutrition.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory requirements for food and dietary supplement manufacturing and nutrition labeling (21 CFR 101 and 111).
