About The Position

As an R&D Engineer, you will lead technical programs focused on developing next‑generation thermoformed packaging products and technologies. You will own all technical activities for assigned project, driving innovation, executing development plans, and delivering packaging solutions used by many of the world’s most recognized brands. The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in polymer science, materials engineering, or packaging technology, combined with a passion for solving complex technical challenges. This is an onsite position based in Franklin Park, IL. Title level will be determined based on experience and business needs.

Requirements

  • B.S./M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Packaging Science, or related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with a strong technical foundation in plastics manufacturing and processing (e.g., extrusion, thermoforming, tooling).
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment and a record of successfully leading capital projects in partnership with OEMs and suppliers.
  • Working knowledge of HIPS, PET, PP, PE resins and additives; experience with coatings and lamination of rigid sheet is preferred.
  • Strong initiative, energy, and ownership of results.
  • Curiosity and awareness of emerging technologies inside and outside the packaging industry.
  • Self‑starter with a positive, hands‑on, “can‑do” approach and the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional projects (commercial, manufacturing, supply management, etc.).
  • Strong technical aptitude and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, results‑oriented environment.
  • Highly organized and self‑motivated.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in consumer food packaging and/or flexible packaging is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the processing of plastic materials for consumer packaging with a focus on portion control packaging.
  • Provide technical input and recommendations on manufacturing equipment to support current operations and future growth.
  • Address internal and external customer needs by developing packaging solutions within a manufacturing environment.
  • Lead the technical integration of projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers to solve complex problems and improve product performance in a timely, cost‑effective manner.
  • Generate new concepts that support the R&D product innovation and technology roadmap.
  • Develop and lead pilot, production, and filling/packaging trials.
  • Contribute to a motivating and engaging environment within the R&D organization.
  • Promote a positive, safe work culture through open communication and teamwork.
  • Ensure adherence to company safety policies and procedures.
  • Travel to suppliers, customers, and other innovation partners and for conferences, trade shows, or training
