As an R&D Engineer at Baker Hughes, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing new downhole technology systems. This role involves developing custom test apparatus, performing vibration and rotor dynamic analysis, and leading innovative projects in collaboration with various teams. The engineer will become a subject matter expert in rotor dynamics and refine testing protocols to enhance the performance of the Artificial Lift product line.

  • Develop test apparatus for critical components.
  • Design, assemble, and operate custom test rigs to evaluate fundamental physics of new components and sub-systems.
  • Perform structured analytic evaluation of test rig accuracy and repeatability.
  • Complete vibration and rotor dynamic analysis on new designs evaluating static and dynamic behavior of mechanical systems.
  • Complete and support system testing and analyze vibration data for components and full string testing.
  • Interact with other teams and customers to discuss findings and resolutions.
  • Develop detailed technical specifications and requirements for components and systems, focusing on high durability, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Operate lab equipment and analyze results for various components and project needs.
  • Run design of experiment testing to build knowledge of critical variable effects on centrifugal pump design.
  • Lead and support various innovative projects with a strong focus on physics, mechanical engineering principles, and rotor dynamics to address varying downhole conditions.
  • Develop and execute test plans coordinating testing with support staff, and complete data analysis and reporting.
  • Define advancements for design, analysis, and testing methods within area of expertise.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or higher with 3+ years' experience, or Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with 6+ years' applicable experience.
  • Experience in mechanical design, test development, vibration testing, and analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with rotor dynamic analysis, vibration testing, and balancing.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
  • Experience working directly with customers and regional personnel to solve customer challenges and identify failure modes.
  • Experience with downhole equipment, aerospace, or automotive industries.
  • Experience related to wear resistance, challenges with gas and sand production.
  • Strong understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and quality control standards.
  • Strong numerical modeling experience and modeling fluid and structural interactions.
