About The Position

The R&D Engineer, Embedded Systems supports EBR’s implanted and external device platform by solving released product problems, bringing past work to current standards, improving reliability, and contributing to firmware and hardware execution. This role is designed for an early-career engineer who wants hands-on exposure across firmware, electronics, and product support in a regulated medical-device environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or related field.
  • Entry-level role with up to 2 years of experience (industry or strong academic projects).
  • Exposure to embedded C/C++, microcontrollers, and basic electronics concepts
  • Curiosity, persistence, and comfort working through ambiguity.
  • Willingness to ask questions and learn from failures.
  • Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing, vision to monitor, and moderate noise levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or project experience in regulated products.
  • Familiarity with lab tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer).
  • Exposure to manufacturing or test environment

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and resolve design related issues related to the embedded systems in our released product.
  • Debug issues spanning firmware, electronics, and system interactions.
  • Support root-cause analysis and contribute to corrective actions.
  • Help update supporting documentation (drawings, test records, traceability) as changes are implemented.
  • Contribute to low-level firmware development under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Assist with microcontroller bring-up, peripheral drivers, and basic communication interfaces.
  • Support firmware verification activities and test execution.
  • Support electrical engineering activities such as board bring-up and testing, signal or power investigations, and component-level troubleshooting.
  • Assist with light mechanical or packaging tasks when relevant (e.g., fit, interfaces, assembly feedback).
  • Learn how firmware, hardware, and mechanics interact as a system.
  • Help maintain accurate, up-to-date technical documentation: test results, change support data, and design control documentation.
  • Learn and follow medical-device quality practices appropriate to the role.
