Role Summary: Quarter Horse cowboy is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations which involve horse nutrition, horse care, horse training, advanced reproductive technology for horses, farriering, fitting and grooming horses for sale, showing horses at sales, horse vaccination protocols, and general horse health management. What to Expect in the Role: Assist with halter breaking weanlings, train young horses, trimming horses’ hooves, daily feeding, grooming and fitting horses for sale. Ensure the safe hauling of horses in trailers to sales or other facility in and out of state. Appreciate, and implement the high standards of humane and productive animal husbandry practices. Abide by strict protocols and schedules for feeding and mineral programs, vaccination and processing protocols, sanitary standards, and managing horses according to the protocols outlined in the King Ranch Quarter Horse Program. Understanding the importance of water, minerals, and supplemental feeding programs in maintenance of horse body condition and their effect on fertility and production. What We Will Be Needing From You: Ability to saddle, mount and ride young horses and introduce in performance of general ranch cattle work. Must be able to use chainsaws, drills, and other power and mechanical equipment in a safe manner for the repair and maintenance of fences/pens/water facilities, and other working areas. Must be able to work with and around horses/livestock (including performance of such functions as castrating, dehorning, branding, and vaccination of various classes of cattle Ability to follow directions from a supervisor, as well as read and follow written protocols and policies that might be handed out from time to time. Ability to interact effectively with coworkers and appreciate and abide by the chain of command. Willingness to provide input and communicate with supervisor relative to any issues that might impact your job performance or the successful operation of your unit. Must be willing to work holidays, overtime and on weekends as the job requirements or other emergencies might demand. Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing. General understanding of (and ability and willingness to perform) simple maintenance and repairs on pens, fences, gates, and water facilities. High School Diploma or equivalent. Prior cattle and horseback experience on a large scale. Open availabilities holidays and weekends.
