Quantum Computing & Strategy Intern – QUEST (Quantum Education & Strategy) Duke Energy – Enterprise Strategy & Solutions (ES&S) Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) Job Type: Internship Duke Energy’s QUEST (Quantum Education & Strategy) initiative is seeking an Intern to support early-stage exploration, education, and strategic evaluation of quantum technologies. This role provides exposure to applied research, enterprise technology strategy, and emerging technology enablement within the energy and utilities industry. The intern will collaborate with enterprise architects, strategists, and external partners to help build foundational quantum literacy and assess potential long-term business applications through the QUEST program.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate program (rising sophomore, junior, or senior) or an approved graduate program
  • Major in Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or related field
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging technologies and applied research
  • Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Coursework or experience in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, probability, or optimization
  • Experience with Python and scientific or technical computing tools (e.g., NumPy, Jupyter, MATLAB, QISKIT)
  • Familiarity with or strong interest in quantum computing concepts (formal experience not required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts clearly
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and comfortable working in an exploratory, early-stage technology environment
  • Prior internship, research, or academic project experience

Responsibilities

  • Support development of quantum education and enablement materials as part of QUEST (Quantum Education & Strategy) for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Conduct research and analysis on quantum computing platforms, algorithms, and industry use cases relevant to energy and utilities
  • Assist with strategic assessments of quantum opportunities aligned with the goals of QUEST
  • Contribute to proof-of-concept exploration using quantum simulators or cloud-based quantum platforms
  • Document findings, insights, and lessons learned from experiments and partner engagements under the QUEST initiative
  • Participate in Duke Energy internship program activities, including networking and professional development sessions
