About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opening for a Quality Specialist at our Rockport Works facility. The Quality Specialist will evaluate product quality using inspection tools and data systems—including inspection maps, ASIS (Automated Surface Inspection System), Operations Inspectors/Technical Group, and Customer Technical Service (CTS)—to determine suitability for a wide range of demanding customer applications. This position requires strong analytical capability, sound decision-making, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, heavy industrial environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across departments and levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to work with technical data systems.
  • Ability to work periodically outside of normal business hours as production needs dictate.
  • Willingness to travel to other Cleveland-Cliffs facilities or customer locations as needed.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work in a fast-paced mill environment with complex operations.
  • Ability to perform duties in a heavy industrial setting, including working around moving equipment, and navigating plant areas safely.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
  • Prior experience in manufacturing, steelmaking, or heavy industrial operations.
  • Familiarity with surface inspection systems, quality tools (e.g., 8D, root cause analysis), or customer specification review.
  • Knowledge of coated steel products and related processing equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Make disposition decisions (reject/retreat) based on customer specifications, product performance requirements, and end-use application.
  • Identify nonconforming material, determine root causes, and initiate immediate containment actions to prevent further quality issues.
  • Analyze production and process data to identify trends affecting quality performance; recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Technical Services, and Customer Quality teams to resolve product concerns and maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Support and coordinate production trials for new customer orders, new coatings, and process improvements.
  • Develop and implement updates to quality procedures, standards, and best practices to drive continuous improvement.
  • Build a full understanding of plant processes, including coating lines, inspection systems, and downstream customer requirements.
  • Participate in problem-solving activities, audits, and customer complaint investigations as needed.
