About The Position

The Quality Inspector – Dump Body Assembly & Paint is responsible for ensuring that dump body products meet all quality, engineering, and customer requirements throughout both the assembly and paint processes . This role inspects fabricated, welded, assembled, and painted components to verify workmanship, dimensional accuracy, surface preparation, coating application, and final finish quality. The Quality Inspector works closely with production, paint, welding, and engineering teams to identify defects, prevent rework, and support continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, or paint inspection.
  • Experience with welded steel structures or heavy equipment preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication, assembly, and paint drawings/specifications.
  • Working knowledge of welding processes and common weld defects.
  • Basic understanding of industrial paint systems and surface preparation methods.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use measuring and inspection tools (tape measures, calipers, gauges).
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and inspect large assemblies for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 40–50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing and paint shop environment with noise, fumes, and temperature variations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience inspecting dump bodies, truck bodies, trailers, or heavy equipment.
  • Paint inspection experience or coating thickness measurement experience.
  • Welding or coating inspection certifications (CWI, NACE, or similar) are a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assembly & Fabrication Inspection Inspect dump body assemblies at multiple stages of production, including: Frames, floors, side walls, tailgates, and subassemblies Hoists, cylinders, hinges, mounts, brackets, and reinforcements Verify dimensional accuracy, tolerances, alignment, and fit-up per engineering drawings.
  • Perform visual inspections of welds for quality, penetration, completeness, and defects (cracks, porosity, undercut, etc.).
  • Ensure components are correctly installed and secured according to work instructions.
  • Paint Process Inspection Inspect dump bodies before, during, and after the paint process to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Verify proper surface preparation , including: Cleaning, blasting, or grinding as required Removal of oil, rust, scale, weld spatter, and contaminants Confirm masking and protection of non-painted components and critical surfaces.
  • Inspect paint application for: Correct coating type, color, and finish Proper film thickness and coverage Uniform appearance, adhesion, and cure Identify and document paint defects such as: Runs, sags, drips, fisheyes, pinholes, dry spray, overspray, blistering, or peeling Verify final appearance meets company and customer cosmetic standards prior to shipment.
  • Documentation & Reporting Read and interpret engineering drawings, paint specifications, BOMs, and work instructions.
  • Complete inspection checklists, quality records, and final acceptance documentation.
  • Accurately document nonconformances related to fabrication, assembly, or paint.
  • Communicate quality concerns clearly to production, paint supervisors, and quality leadership.
  • Nonconformance & Corrective Action Identify defects or deviations from specifications at any stage of assembly or paint.
  • Initiate and document nonconformance reports (NCRs).
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Verify rework and corrective actions prior to product release.
  • Safety & Compliance Perform inspections in accordance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow all PPE and safety requirements, especially in paint booth and coating areas.
  • Support compliance with ISO, customer, and regulatory quality standards, if applicable.
  • Continuous Improvement Provide feedback on recurring assembly or paint quality issues.
  • Assist with internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support training by identifying common workmanship or coating-related defects.
