About The Position

Koppers Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate for a laboratory position that involves preparing and testing samples from manufacturing or other handling processes using qualitative and quantitative analysis. The goal is to determine if substances meet established standards and requirements. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of chemical testing equipment and processes, employing a variety of methods during lab analysis work. Responsibilities include preparing documents that report lab results and relay product specifications to customers, maintaining laboratory test results record-keeping systems, and troubleshooting minor lab-related equipment issues. The position emphasizes workplace safety and the handling of hazardous materials, requiring the ability to conduct multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary as production needs change, and the role involves collecting and handling samples from production and storage areas, conducting raw material testing, and ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements. The candidate will also participate in business improvement activities, record and interpret data, and collaborate with colleagues across various departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Laboratory, or Science; advanced degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience working in an analytical lab preferred.
  • Experience performing wet chemistry.
  • Experience using instrumentation such as Particle Analyzer, XRF, ICP-OES, and HPLC preferred.
  • Ability to record laboratory experiments.
  • Ability to present information both written and verbally.
  • Ability to learn and understand policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate difficulties or problems related to essential duties.
  • Must be able to work within a team environment.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in MS Office.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and test samples from manufacturing or other handling processes using qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Understand chemical testing equipment and processes, employing various methods during lab analysis.
  • Prepare documents reporting lab results and product specifications for customers.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory test results record-keeping systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor lab-related equipment.
  • Preserve workplace safety and handle hazardous materials appropriately.
  • Conduct multiple projects simultaneously with little supervision.
  • Collect and handle samples from production and storage areas.
  • Carry out raw material testing for product release.
  • Conduct routine laboratory reactions using a wide range of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure laboratory systems and equipment comply with GMP requirements.
  • Participate in business improvement activities within the laboratory.
  • Record, organize, report, and interpret data.
  • Review, update, and compose documents, methods, and procedures.
  • Prepare samples and coordinate analysis with outside labs.
  • Prepare shipments of chemicals and products, up to 5-gallons in size.
  • Check work of colleagues where necessary.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and analytical staff.
  • Contribute to other projects and plans to reach divisional objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
