About The Position

This position supervises and maintains Food Safety and Quality Assurance programs including but not limited to microbiological testing, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) programs, in-house and third-party audits, quality evaluations and compliance certifications. This position directly supervises department team members and ensures that work is performed in compliance with Quality and Food Safety requirements at all times. The position has rotating shifts and fluctuating hours based on business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Ag Science, Microbiology or a related field of science from a four-year college or university required.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of related experience in a food systems or food manufacturing environment with increasing levels of responsibility and authority; 1+ years of leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control and cost management.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of State and Federal food safety regulations, relevant legislation, Good Management Practices (GMP) and HACCP programs.
  • Skilled at performing detailed computations and preparing detailed reports.
  • Strong analytical and project management skills.
  • Must be able to work under tight deadlines in a manufacturing environment and respond to “on call” hours as needed.
  • Ability to speak, write and read English.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Must have effective organizational, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint required.
  • Must have ability to use or learn the ERP computer system (NAV).
  • Must have personal integrity, flexibility, dependability, ability to work within policy guidelines and to work independently.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to growers, customers, clients, sales, upper management and other employees of the organization is essential.
  • Must have strong math skills and be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Seasonal travel between Yuma, AZ (22 wks in Winter) & Salinas, CA (30 wks in Summer) – REQUIRED.

Nice To Haves

  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure team members take scheduled breaks and lunches, and finish shifts on time.
  • Address and correct employee performance issues promptly and effectively.
  • Manage and execute the training and development of team members on Department and GreenGate Fresh policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates and monitors systemic sampling of incoming raw products, finished products and plant environment for safety and quality.
  • Develop new and improved ways of testing and monitoring food safety using knowledge of chemistry, microbiology and other sciences.
  • Supervise food sampling procedures to ensure compliance with company and government regulations and standards.
  • Assists with internal audits, document audits, vendor audits, USDA audits, FDA audits and other third party audits such as SQF.
  • Manage internal control samples, testing, and record keeping ensuring completeness; review written and electronic records for accuracy and validity of results; provides management with copies of test records and reports.
  • Identify areas for improvement in the food safety testing and sample processing.
  • Evaluate food processing and storage operations and assist in the development of quality assurance programs for such operations; recommend and help implement corrective action initiatives ensuring food safety issues and concerns are resolved in a timely manner while minimizing customer risk, cost and production down time.
  • Coordinates pre-operation inspection and verifies effective execution of sanitation activities.
  • Coordinates with cross-functional departments regarding the communication of approval to release raw product for processing.
  • Cooperate with supervisors and managers and ensure compliance with all Company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Hazard Communication, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21 - Section 110.
  • Coordinate work assignments, monitor employee performance and provide training on job duties, company policies and procedures.
  • Administer and support safety and health programs to ensure a safe work place and to be in compliance with county, state, federal, national and international regulations.
  • Foster an environment where the importance of worker and food safety is based on proper safe handling of product including maintaining cold chain integrity.
  • Utilize work method programs for training and education to motivate employees to improve performance and quality of work.
  • Develop improved performance of employees through feedback and coaching.
  • Complete necessary paperwork accurately and in a timely manner to ensure an efficient and steady flow of information.
  • Knowledge and effective interpretation and implementation of applicable labor laws.
  • Ability to work in a partnership with the Human Resources department.
  • Manage special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
