The hourly rate pay for this position at Scotts/Hawthorne will generally fall between $25.45 - 34.35 per hour and is paid weekly. Scotts/Hawthorne will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location. We are looking for a Technician to join our Scotts Miracle Gro team in Geismar, LA! The Quality and EHS Technician plays a vital part in supporting both the Quality and Safety teams at a Growing Media (mulch and soil) facility. Primary responsibilities focus on performing essential daily tests and inspections to ensure safe and effective operations. Key components of this position involve overseeing and coordinating EHS and Quality compliance. Ensuring the site adheres to all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as our own corporate standards. This role is essential to maintaining a safe, high-quality environment for all personnel. What you'll do in this role: Performing chemical and physical testing according to approved methods. Entering data and reporting results. Completing line audits and material inspections. Executing other tasks assigned by leadership. Execution of chemical and physical analysis per approved methods and protocols. Interpreting results and advising plant operations on results and trends in the data. Completion of assigned tasks and responsibilities that include any combination of the following: record keeping, LIMS data, SAP entry, product release, instrument maintenance and repair, supply management, safety and operation training, sample collection, audits, and inspections. Support External analysis, R&D. Perform housekeeping and safety and environmental tasks. Ensure EPA and OSHA documentation compliance with guidance from the corporate EH&S department. Collaborate with employees and managers to identify and mitigate EH&S concerns. Maintain a Job Hazard Analysis database and ensure required PPE is available. Maintain Incident, Injury, Near Miss, and Safe Behavior documentation and follow-up on resulting action items. Coordinate RCRA compliance activities and training. Provide guidance and direction for emergency response activities for the facility. Coordinate EH&S training sessions and compile training records in accordance with regulatory and corporate requirements. Record monitoring, sampling, and disposal data into recordkeeping software according to regulations. Coordinate vendor inspections and services (fire, sprinkler, waste water, etc.). Must be able to periodically work flexible hours, including second and third shifts, if necessary. Team lead on the safety committee.

Requirements

  • High school graduate with three years of experience in a lab setting or with two years advanced training degree.
  • OR High School Diploma or equivalent with one to two years of experience in EH&S roles, preferably in a manufacturing, agriculture or related environment.
  • One to three years of analytical chemistry and instrumentation experience.
  • Knowledge of quality concepts and methods (GLP, ISO, GMP, Lean, Six Sigma).
  • Knowledge of general analytical testing methods, techniques and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of fertilizer chemistry.
  • Knowledge in EPA, OSHA, State Workers Comp Laws and Wastewater compliance.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Health and Safety regulations and standards.
  • Working knowledge of metrics, both lagging and leading.
  • Knowledge of facilities and operational procedures.
  • Ability to make good decisions.
  • Good interpersonal skills with a customer service attitude.
  • Ability to use SAP software.
  • Ability to provide preventative maintenance and repair to instrumentation.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet savvy.
  • Ability to lead meetings and train employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships to gain cross-functional alignment for execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with quality programs is desirable (G.C, HPLC, ICP, AA, Leco, Spectrophotometer, Wet Chemistry Experience is preferred).
  • OSHA Certification preferred.
