About The Position

The Purchasing Manager is responsible for ensuring all materials required for production, fabrication, installation, and shipping are ordered accurately, cost-effectively, and on time. This role requires a proactive leader who is organized, cost-conscious, and dedicated to supporting a streamlined manufacturing process. The Purchasing Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that production is never delayed due to material shortages and that all materials are properly organized, stored, received, and distributed.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Purchasing Manager – Required
  • Experience with MRP systems – Required
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple vendors, deadlines, and internal requests
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

Responsibilities

  • Accurately and proactively order all materials required for production.
  • Ensure production always has materials on time—material delays should never be the bottleneck.
  • Seek out necessary information to complete orders; lack of communication from others is not an acceptable reason for missed ordering.
  • Conduct ongoing cost reduction efforts, including minimizing rush-order costs and correcting ordering errors.
  • Obtain 2–3 competitive quotes for purchases over $500.
  • Renegotiate pricing with primary vendors every 6 months to ensure competitive costs.
  • Distinguish between stock materials and special-order materials; create systems to prevent running out of stock items.
  • Strategically manage procurement rather than simply processing orders—evaluate options and identify best-value solutions.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with primary, secondary, and tertiary vendors.
  • Challenge existing vendors on pricing and terms to ensure cost savings.
  • Conduct periodic strategic negotiations with top vendors to secure the best pricing and product specifications.
  • Oversee the receiving of all materials, ensuring correct quantities, quality, and condition.
  • Organize and store all materials properly—materials should never be left outside in the elements.
  • Ensure materials are given to the correct departments or stored in the proper locations.
  • Maintain material organization systems for easy tracking, retrieval, and job readiness.
  • Coordinate with fabrication, routing, outsourcing, and installation teams to ensure all required materials are prepared, organized, and available.
  • Support installation teams by verifying materials received match job requirements.
  • Assist with the execution of material kitting, palletization, and job-ready organization.
  • Coordinate outgoing shipments to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper packaging.
  • Work with shipping carriers to balance cost, lead time, and reliability.
  • Ensure crates and packages protect products while minimizing unnecessary packaging costs.
  • Prevent missed or forgotten items that result in additional shipping expenses.
  • Assist in implementing inventory control measures to reduce theft, loss, and waste.
  • Support the adoption and use of material tracking technologies and processes.
  • Monitor material spending as a percentage of revenue and contribute to improvement initiatives.
