The Certified Pulmonary Function Testing Technician at the University of Maryland Medical System is responsible for providing comprehensive diagnostic testing and care to patients with pulmonary and sleep disorders. This role involves performing various pulmonary function tests, explaining procedures to patients, and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

  • Perform pulmonary-function, lung-capacity, diffusion capacity, and blood-and-oxygen tests to gather data for physician diagnosis and treatment.
  • Confer with patients in the treatment room to explain test procedures.
  • Explain specified methods of breathing to patients and conduct pulmonary-function tests using spirometers and other equipment.
  • Measure expired air using various analyzers.
  • Observe and record readings on metering devices of analysis equipment and convey findings to physicians for interpretation.
  • Maintain patient charts and ensure accurate filing/scanning of information.
  • Maintain clinical equipment and notify management of issues or concerns.
  • Operate equipment safely and competently.
  • Restock and prepare the lab for the next day according to par levels.
  • Notify the manager responsible for ordering supplies when appropriate.
  • Function as a collaborative team member, demonstrating commitment to group goals and teamwork.
  • Must be licensed by the State of Maryland as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Recognized by the NBRC as either a Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) is highly preferred.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) with Pulmonary Function experience will be considered but must obtain CPFT or RPFT within 1 year of hire.
  • Certification in BCLS required.
  • Certification in ACLS preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of one year PFT testing within the past three years is preferred.
  • Experience in pulmonary function testing within the past three years.
  • Ability to adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the care setting.
  • Competitive pay range of $36.63-$44.21 per hour.
