About The Position

The Pulmonary Function Technologist (PFT) position at Advocate Health involves performing pulmonary diagnostic testing, including spirometry, lung volumes, maximum voluntary ventilations, diffusion of carbon monoxide studies, bronchial provocation tests, and administering inhaled medications as per provider orders. The role also includes collecting and analyzing blood gas samples, performing home oxygen assessments, conducting 6-minute walks, indirect calorimetry, and providing bronchoscopy assists. The position requires effective communication, conflict resolution skills, and a commitment to patient safety. The technologist must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care and interpret patient data effectively.

Requirements

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Active Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program with a minimum of an associate degree.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pulmonary diagnostic testing including spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion studies.
  • Administer inhaled medications per provider order.
  • Collect and analyze blood gas samples.

  • Provide bronchoscopy assists.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Promote a culture of safety and report patient safety events.
