About The Position

The Respiratory Care teams are an integral part of daily clinical care. We work collaboratively with our clinical caregivers, patients, and families to improve and maintain ideal lung health. The goal of our Respiratory Therapist is to perform with a high degree of competency in all clinical aspects of respiratory care for all age groups (adult, geriatric, and neonatal). Respiratory therapy includes the application and monitoring of medical gases (excluding anesthetic gases) and environmental control systems, mechanical ventilatory support, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents related to respiratory care procedures, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation related and limited to respiratory care. Utilizes the application of scientific principles for the identification, prevention, remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree - Graduate of accredited program in respiratory care
  • Six months in Pulmonary Function Lab A.A.S
  • Texas Medical Board License by the TMB Upon Hire and
  • Registered by the NBRC Upon Hire
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT Certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) Upon Hire
  • (RPFT) REGISTERED PULM FUNC TECH within 180 Days
  • (CPFT) CERTIFIED PULM FUNC TECH within 180 Days
  • Specialty areas may have increased certification/license requirements as dictated by unit or standard of care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs PFT and CPX testing according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Arterial blood gas testing.
  • Accurately assess patient's effort/cooperation to all modes of PFT testing.
  • Displays strong knowledge of PFT related pharmacology including methacholine challenge.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assemble and troubleshoot PFT devices. Also can perform, read and document daily QA reports.
  • Utilizes effective communication with physician regarding ordered tests, interpretation of PFLab data, and other physical findings. Reports critical values to physician.
  • Fosters teamwork by treating all staff fairly, facilitating 2-way communication and having a collaborative attitude.
  • Demonstrates safe arterial puncture skills and follows departmental policies/procedures when obtaining arterial blood gas samples.
  • Generates patient charges at end of shift with little error; Maintains pulmonary function records and backs up test data according to departmental policies.
  • Reports all relative patient care and equipment issues to clinical manager. Requests assistance from the charge therapist or clinical manager when appropriate.
  • On one's own initiative, assists in writing procedures, giving in-services as recognized necessary by the individual.
  • Willingly assumes delegated responsibility for inventory control and equipment repair.
  • Monitors own areas of strength and weakness and seeks out opportunities and/or guidance for improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
