About The Position

The Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery seeks Academic Pulmonology/CC Physicians to join our team. Unlike any other academic department in the country, the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery is comprised of physicians and scientists from a variety of disciplines focused on the treatment of lung disease including pulmonary and critical care medicine, allergy, thoracic surgery, lung transplant surgery, sleep medicine, diagnostic imaging and interventional thoracic radiology, pulmonary pathology and clinical and scientific research and medical education. This unique multi-disciplinary center provides synergy for cutting edge therapies and novel basic and clinical research and educational activities that span the continuum of medical and surgical care of patients with common to rare lung disorders. Each year, the department’s physicians treat more than 50,000 patients, of which approximately one-half are cared for on an outpatient basis. Temple’s pulmonary services extend beyond Temple University Hospital to also cover Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus and the Temple Health Oaks outpatient center. Across the health system, Temple physicians perform approximately 1,000 invasive pulmonary procedures per year. Volume continues to grow with regard to the higher-end, more specialized procedures including endobronchial ultrasound and navigational bronchoscopy. Bronchial thermoplasty has also been added to the repertoire of interventional therapeutics performed by the pulmonary procedures service. Interventional Radiology is a key partner in this component, working alongside our pulmonary interventionalists to provide consistent and simultaneous services from consultations to highly complex care. Temple is already a leader in the United States for lung transplantation, acute and chronic care of pulmonary diseases, clinical and scientific research, and medical education. The collaborative atmosphere created by the new department bolsters Temple’s already strong pulmonary clinical trials program, including research into the causes of and therapies for COPD, emphysema, alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis and sleep apnea. The integration and alignment of clinical and basic science research efforts within the new department also advance Temple Health’s leadership in personalized medicine by creating a more comprehensive understanding of genetic and environmental causes of advanced lung disorders, facilitating discovery of novel therapies and providing individualized patient care. This is an exciting time for Temple’s pulmonary program. We expect that we will continue to reshape the standard of care for patients with lung disease and strengthen our leadership role in the areas of research and medical education.
