About The Position

Vintage Books, an imprint of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, seeks a Publishing Associate to support the SVP, Deputy Publisher, and occasionally the Associate Publisher for Backlist, in a fast-paced environment. This position offers a unique perspective on the strategy and operations of Vintage Books; it is an excellent opportunity to continue your exposure to all areas of the publishing process. The Publishing Associate will be a highly motivated and enthusiastic self-starter who is detail-oriented and loves books of all types. An interest in working with various departments—including Editorial, Managing Editorial, Sales, and Publicity—to bring books to a wide readership is essential. The successful candidate will be a creative, analytical thinker who is comfortable performing typical administrative and project management duties while demonstrating the ability to take initiative and exercise independent thinking where needed. A genuine interest in book publishing and reading is strongly preferred.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one year of experience working in book publishing or a related industry like media, literary agency, or entertainment preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate appropriately across all levels and divisions of the company as well as with external parties.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office Programs, particularly Excel, as well as an ability to pick up new systems quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in sales, research, and sales analysis a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Research and create detailed sales and inventory reporting to help inform publishing decisions, including list-building.
  • Provide individual title sales and author sales history as needed, and frontlist laydown information.
  • Create and distribute weekly, monthly, and seasonal reports and/or updates (weekly point-of-sale report, media tie-in grid and newsletter, anniversary grid).
  • Core member of media tie-in team: maintain media tie-in grid, assist with outreach to studios, coordinate tie-in sticker process.
  • Assist with researching competition for timing and pricing recommendations for frontlist and backlist books.
  • Attend backlist reprint meetings and manage queries and follow-ups with other departments.
  • Update metadata (descriptive copy, keywords, etc.), including Web copy, for select titles.
  • Handle special projects to support the overall efforts of the imprint.
  • Assist Deputy Publisher in preparation for weekly and seasonal meetings.
  • Schedule department meetings, coordinate meeting agendas, gather meeting materials.
  • Overall/catch-all admin for the department, process expense reports, order books, etc.
