About The Position

Under general supervision, this exempt position performs supervisory work involving the assignment, coordination, and participation in activities carried out by skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled personnel engaged in the maintenance and construction of City buildings, streets, and equipment. Duties include overseeing and assisting with the maintenance and repair of fences, municipal buildings, roadways, and associated equipment, as well as supporting minor repairs of light equipment assigned to the department. The position also assists with land clearing for designated areas and sidewalks, and coordinates and supports setting up for City special events. Work is performed under the direction of the Public Works Director or designee.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Some related college courses and/or street maintenance experience where knowledge of area maintenance has been gained.
  • Must have and maintain a Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including tractors, backhoes, bobcats, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 to 5 years’ supervisory experience preferred.
  • MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) / Traffic Control Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coordinates, assigns, and evaluates the work of maintenance personnel; determines work activities and resource requirements to complete assignments efficiently; establishes work priorities; and inspects equipment to ensure safe and proper operating condition.
  • Provides recommendations on personnel actions, including promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions, and terminations, in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Supervises workers performing a variety of maintenance operations including: the patching and repair of streets and sidewalks and the demolition, construction and repair of beach crossovers.
  • Supervises workers in the removal of trash, debris, and other obstructive items from the city’s streets, roadways, and pedestrian areas.
  • Inspect roadways and public rights-of-way to identify hazards and maintenance needs.
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance and construction of departmental facilities and structures, including shelters, maintenance buildings, and related infrastructure.
  • Oversees, reviews, and assists personnel in the repair and maintenance of City structures and equipment assigned to the department; develops and implements work schedules for routine assignments and special events; and inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure quality and compliance with standards.
  • Ensures that work is being performed efficiently and effectively; enforces applicable safety requirements to ensure the safety of residents and workers.
  • Maintains and repairs light equipment, such as small engines used by the department; ensures the proper operation and care of equipment used in maintaining streets and facilities.
  • Operate and oversee use of heavy equipment such as graders, backhoes, and dump trucks.
  • Assists supervisor in preparing the budget by preparing cost estimates of maintenance; monitoring expenditures; recommending equipment purchases.
  • Makes recommendations for improved production methods of maintenance workers.
  • Assists Public Works Operations Manager and workers in resolving work problems.
  • Coordinate hurricane/storm preparation and post-storm debris removal and recovery efforts.
  • Performs other related work as required.
