About The Position

This position is part of a team responsible for building and maintaining paved roadways throughout Weld County and may be assigned to any division within Public Works as needed. The role involves a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work, including the operation of asphalt paving, patching, chip seal, and milling equipment, as well as trucks and other tools in construction. A certain amount of manual labor is required. The successful candidate must possess basic knowledge of road construction and maintenance procedures and be capable of performing tasks without immediate supervision, following detailed instructions for efficient project completion. Maintaining a courteous and safe work manner is essential, as is effective verbal communication via radio. When interacting with the public, a courteous and helpful attitude is expected. Administrative duties include basic computer skills for data reporting and record-keeping, and the ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions and memos. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with county employees and the public is also key. The position requires availability for extraordinary hours during emergency events, including assisting with snow and inclement weather operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two years’ experience operating tractor-trailer and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire.
  • Ability to be MSHA certified.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in two of the following equipment operation skills: Asphalt Milling Machine, Front End Loader, Tandem Axle Truck, Asphalt Paver, Backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 410), Compaction Equipment, Skid Steer, Distributor.
  • Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.
  • Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
  • Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
  • This position will participate in random substance use screening.
  • Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.

Responsibilities

  • Report/record data as per departmental requirements using basic computer skills.
  • Write, read and comprehend single instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public.
  • Respond to and work extraordinary hours during emergency events.
  • Assist with snow and other inclement weather operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
