About The Position

The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets is under general supervision and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s streets. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience. Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets I: ($23.76-$26.40/hour) The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets I is under general supervision; this is the entry-level class in the Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets series. Employees are not required to have directly related work experience. Work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. Once trained in specific tasks, employees are expected to work with limited supervision. Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets II: ($24.20-$29.04/hour) The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets II is under general supervision; this is the mid-level class in the Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets series. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of skilled and technical assignments related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets. Positions at this level may oversee moderate projects. Must be willing to train less experienced technicians. Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets III: ($26.62-$31.94/hour) The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets III is under general supervision; this is the most advanced class in the Public Works Maintenance Technician-Streets series. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of skilled and technical assignments related to the maintenance, repair and construction of water, stormwater, and street infrastructure with minimal instruction. Positions at this level will oversee moderate to complex projects. Employees will train less experienced technicians.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License in good standing required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months, a class “B” commercial driver’s license, First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Ability to obtain Colorado Department of Transportation Flagger certification within 6 months.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Two years of directly related experience in public works, utility work, street maintenance, or closely related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months, Confined Space Certification, and LTAP Road Scholar 1 certification.
  • Ability to operate road grader
  • Four years of directly related experience.
  • LTAP Road Scholar 2 certification.
  • Ability to operate all standard street equipment at a proficient level. (street sweeper, tractors (all transmission styles), mowers, loader, backhoe, excavator, road grader, vac-truck, truck sprayer, dump trucks, snowplows / sanders, asphalt patcher, roller.)

Responsibilities

  • Street surface maintenance, construction, and repair; Breaks and removes pavement; excavates, shovels, hauls, and loads materials, maintains drainage, clears overgrowth, identifies basic problems, and more. Patches asphalt surfaces including, placing, raking, and compacting hot and cold asphalt mixes.
  • Grades and maintains dirt and gravel roads.
  • Mows, weeds, and string trims rights-of way as needed.
  • Maintains landscaping within right-of-way and medians.
  • Performs temporary traffic control, including maintenance of traffic control devices and street signage, flagging, and directing traffic at work sites and controlling related safety functions at job sites.
  • Responds to emergency water main and water service line breaks and leaks.
  • Inspects and performs daily maintenance such as greasing on all equipment and vehicles prior to operation.
  • Assists in performing basic service and maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Removes snow with plows and de-ices city streets, rights-of-way, and city-maintained sidewalks and trails as needed. Snow removal operations are often overnight.
  • Operates vehicles used in construction and maintenance such as CDL tandem dump trucks, tractors, mowers, pickups, trailers, snowplows, street sweepers, backhoes, excavators, road grader, jet/vac trucks, rollers, water trucks, front-end loaders, skid steer loaders, chippers, and others.
  • Operates air compressor with pneumatic air tools, chain saws, string trimmers, demo saws, bush cutters, jackhammers, tampers, concrete saws, pressure washers, and others.
  • Uses hand tools including axes, sledgehammers, wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, rollers and others.
  • Patrols and inspects ditch system facilities for damage, leaks, vandalism, or other needed repairs. Performs field maintenance duties in the operation, repair, and reconstruction of the City’s raw water ditch system.
  • Cleans up debris and litter; performs landscape maintenance including clearing debris, brush, trees, and tree limbs from ditches, burning of ditch banks, reservoir areas and right-of-way areas.
  • Repairs and maintains headgates, dams, and pipelines. Installs and maintains flumes, meters, and gauges, records readings from flow charts, clocks, meters, and gauges; constructs new ditches.
  • May locate city utility lines as well as GPS assets.
  • Collects and disposes of trash dumped along streets and city rights-of-way.
  • Conducts stormwater infrastructure maintenance such as brush removal and grading in ponds, channels, outfalls, culverts, and storm water collection systems.
  • Conducts closed circuit television (CCTV) routine and response driven inspection and maintenance of storm sewer manholes, inlets, and lines.
  • Required to be on 24-hour, rotating, on-call status as scheduled.
  • May be assigned to labor intensive special collection events of household trash collection events.
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides to control weeds and brush along streets, rights-of-way, and stormwater structures. Maintains usage records. Follows all applicable laws and uses required PPE.
  • Applies mosquito suppression and control pesticides via truck overnight based on schedule. Typically, this will be one night every 3-6 weeks.  Maintains usage records. Follows all applicable laws and uses required PPE.
  • Installs and maintains traffic signs according to direction and MUTCD standards.
  • May enter confined spaces utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), related safety equipment and entry permits.
  • Performs periodic weekend, evening, and holiday work when necessary.
  • May assist in irrigation ditch inspections and work if needed.
  • Assists any other city departments when needed. Most often stormwater, water, and fleet.
  • Assists in periodic shutoffs of water to customers due to lack of payment as directed.
  • Knowledge of laws and safety as it relates to vehicle operations, general construction tools and equipment.
  • Skill in operating all assigned equipment, machinery, tools, or equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, City Street signs and maps.
  • Always prioritizes personal and team safety while at work.
  • Ability to read and understand maps and workplans.
  • Ability to learn MUTCD traffic and sign standards.

  • Skill in operating all assigned equipment, machinery, tools, and vehicles, including but not limited to mowers, tractors, pickups, dump trucks with plows, snowplows, street sweepers, front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators, jet/vac trucks and skid steer loaders.
  • Skill in the proper placement of cones, barricades, and warning devices.
  • Skill in the proper methods of directing traffic flow at job sites.
  • Skill in operation of road grader.
  • Ability to learn basic repair work in irrigation systems.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and use independent judgment appropriately.
  • Leads street crews in all types of operations.
  • Skill in all regular street related equipment and tools.
  • Ability to train and motivate.
