About The Position

Working foreman responsible for a specialized work force performing and supporting road maintenance, construction, reclamation, and crushing/mining activities of the Public Works Department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Four years’ experience working in the appropriate construction or maintenance field, including six months supervisory experience.
  • Or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill and ability.
  • Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required.
  • MSHA certification required.
  • Must have a basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair equipment and materials.
  • Must have the ability to use Microsoft Office package, ArcGIS, and Cartegraph.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Must effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos with the ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to effectively present information to the supervisor, to other staff or the public, as needed.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
  • Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
  • This position will participate in random substance use screening.
  • Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.

Responsibilities

  • Assume some supervisory duties in support of the division supervisor and may function as the division supervisor in their absence.
  • Complete employee evaluations as required by county code and create employee documentation as needed.
  • Counsel with employees when needed.
  • Access and interpret the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.
  • Train and demonstrate standard operating procedures, including safety protocols in both Mining & Trucking.
  • Work with miners on process and plant set-up/operations.
  • Train new truck operators and direct experienced truck drivers in the proper techniques and practices used for road maintenance.
  • Train and demonstrate pre and post trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
  • Operate a variety of Class 8 trucks with various transmissions.
  • Train and assist in operation of mining, crushing, and reclamation equipment.
  • Operate and train new operators on a variety of material loading equipment.
  • Must communicate well and be capable of dealing with the public.
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of Excel, Word, and Cartegraph.
  • Create and manage multiple material tracking spreadsheets, input data into Cartegraph, and government portals (for example, MSHA and Commencement/Closure of pits).
  • Schedule and follow-up on heavy equipment, semi-truck and trailer repairs/maintenance.
  • Make decisions independently with outside contractors and vendors with minimal direction from the supervisor.
  • Coordinate with other Divisions for material placement and trucking needs.
  • Organize and complete projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Report maintenance/construction problems to proper manager.
  • Verify time and labor in software program provided by the County for direct reports.
  • Support Emergency Management responses and be available to respond to and work extraordinary hours.
  • Employ situational awareness and recognize potential risks to staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
