About The Position

Under basic supervision, the Public Works Equipment Operator is responsible for operating specialized equipment in the installation, repair, and maintenance activities of assigned area of responsibility. Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Public Works Equipment Operator series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Public Works Equipment Operator, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance of equipment; routine construction, repair, and maintenance methods; basic safety standards and practices for the operation of tools and equipment.
  • Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of assigned functional operations.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience in construction which included operation of light equipment.
  • Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class A commercial driver's license prior to employment.
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in routine construction, repair, and routine maintenance tasks, repairs City streets and sidewalks.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains vehicles and equipment.
  • Calculates the amount of materials needed for tasks.
  • Services water mains, taps, and valves; paints fire hydrants.
  • Performs traffic control around work sites.
  • Cuts trees and brush; remove brush, debris, and trash from streets, right-of-ways, and storm drains.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
  • Performs all related duties.
