About The Position

McNeese State University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Public Services Librarian/Assistant Professor in the Frazar Memorial Library. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified position. The appointment is available immediately. The Public Services Librarian/Assistant Professor reports to the Head of Public Services. This individual is part of a team that participates in information literacy (library instruction), reference, liaison, scholarship, and assessment initiatives. This includes conducting building tours; demonstrating databases; creating resources; serving shifts at the public services desks; building relationships with academic departments, administrative offices, and support services, participating in scholarly communication, and assessing library initiatives. This individual has special emphasis on assessing and evaluating library initiatives, instruction, and services.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing technology.
  • Ability to work well with library patrons and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage a diverse workload, and meet deadlines.
  • Skill and comfort in preparing and conducting presentations with a variety of audiences.
  • Adaptable to sudden changes in task priorities and work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working in public services in an academic setting.
  • Experience assessing library services.

Responsibilities

  • Advocates library services across campus.
  • Participates in the library's liaison program.
  • Plans and conducts library orientations, classes on information literacy, and other course-specific information literacy activities.
  • Prepares special materials, reports, study guides, and related materials.
  • Analyzes and reports qualitative and quantitative data from various sources to support strategic planning.
  • Researches, experiments, and implements new methods of data collection to improve library assessment.
  • Maintains current awareness of changes and trends in libraries and librarianship through activities such as, but not limited to, reading the professional literature; attending conferences, professional meetings, and workshops; completing additional coursework; engaging in scholarship; and contributing to the library profession.
  • Provides reference service and research assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors through various modes (face-to-face, email, phone, chat, text, etc.).
  • Organizes library resources.
  • Demonstrates commitment to excellent service and ability to work successfully in a collegial environment within a diverse community that includes: faculty, students, library staff, and other members of the university community, members of the profession, and the general public.
  • Contributes to the improvement of library programs and services.
  • Serves on Committees
  • Participates in evening and weekend rotations.
  • Responds to patron requests or questions by phone and in person.
  • Assists in training graduate and undergraduate student workers.
  • Relocates and re-organizes library books when needed.
  • Creates course-specific activities for self-guided student tours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Physically capable of retrieving library resources from multiple locations, pushing loaded book carts, and lifting twenty pounds.
