About The Position

The Public Service Representative - Spanish Speaking performs paraprofessional work to administer road examinations to applicants for all classes of driver’s licenses. This role includes administering and grading written drivers examinations, performing cashier functions for driver’s license and/or motor vehicle fees, and providing translation and interpretation services for Spanish speaking customers. The representative also reviews and completes motor vehicle title and registration applications.

Requirements

  • Completion of eight years elementary school.
  • Two years of general office experience, preferably including one year in a driver or motor vehicle facility.
  • Working knowledge of business English, spelling, and commercial arithmetic.
  • Working knowledge of office methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Elementary knowledge of the Illinois Vehicle Code as it applies to office tasks.
  • Elementary knowledge of basic bookkeeping procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to maintain records of some complexity.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the general public and maintain satisfactory working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate independently within defined procedures.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift/carry 0-25 lbs.
  • Ability to travel to other facilities and/or mobile locations.
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, translating, and writing in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Administers road examinations to applicants for all classes of driver’s licenses.
  • Serves as information clerk to the public and explains improper actions to applicants during the examination.
  • Reviews and completes driver’s license applications for processing.
  • Checks appropriateness and validity of applicant identification documents.
  • Administers and grades written drivers examinations and explains incorrect test responses.
  • Codes applications according to results and administers vision tests.
  • Operates photographic equipment to prepare photo identification or driver’s license for applicants.
  • Performs cashier functions for driver license and/or motor vehicle fees.
  • Balances cash or checks with validation tape totals to assure that all fees are accurately accounted for.
  • Prepares deposit records or other routine financial documents necessary to process collected fees.
  • May be required to take deposit to bank and prepares reports for supervisor on applications processed.
  • Reviews and completes motor vehicle title and registration applications.
  • Reviews fee checks and assures necessary attachments are present.
  • Accepts cash or checks for fees and prepares for final processing.
  • Performs manual or automated sticker sales as required.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
