About The Position

The Public Safety Telecommunicator - Trainee position is an entry-level role designed to provide essential support within the County's emergency 911 communication system. The primary purpose of this classification is to receive and respond to emergency calls, ensuring that the necessary information is gathered and communicated effectively to emergency responders. This position is structured to facilitate a progressive learning experience, where the trainee will participate in an in-house training program that covers the fundamentals of emergency communications, local policies, and procedures. The role is closely supervised by senior officers, allowing for a supportive environment as the trainee develops the skills and knowledge required to advance to a fully competent Public Safety Telecommunicator, Senior. As part of the training, the telecommunicator will engage in various activities, including shadowing experienced officers, studying relevant manuals and policies, and demonstrating proficiency in training modules. The trainee will learn to handle emergency calls, including TDD calls and language line communications, while maintaining calm and providing pre-arrival instructions in accordance with Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) guidelines. The position also involves logging calls and dispatch information into an automated system, utilizing the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and CAD terminals, and ensuring accurate record-keeping. In addition to emergency calls, the telecommunicator will manage non-emergency inquiries, providing information, answering questions, and directing calls to the appropriate departments or agencies. The role requires monitoring multiple radio frequencies and alarm systems, as well as coordinating with other departments to address community issues such as road hazards or utility outages. Overall, this position is critical in ensuring effective communication and response during emergencies, contributing to the safety and well-being of the community.
